Can we use comics to mainstream biodiversity, climate research, and Nature-based Solutions by telling engaging stories for everyone?
Biodiversa+ and The Nature of Cities think so.
That’s why the two have partnered to create Science2Story, a collaboration that transforms research into compelling visual narratives. Through storytelling, the initiative helps make complex science research knowledge more accessible, emotional, and relevant to daily life.
On 10–11 June 2025, during the BiodivClim final event at the Comic Art Museum in Brussels, three new long-form comics were launched, each inspired by the 21 research projects funded through BiodivClim, a COFUND Action initiated in 2019 under Horizon 2020. The programme supported transnational research exploring the critical links between biodiversity and climate change. Now, as the research phase comes to a close, these scientific findings are being shared with the world through the power of storytelling.
Biodiversa+, in collaboration with The Nature of Cities, created these comics to bring the science of BiodivClim to a broader audience. By combining scientific insights with storytelling, the comics offer a creative and engaging way to reflect on environmental challenges and our changing world.
The three comics are:
- Tides of Change – A narrative about mangroves and their role in coastal resilience.
- The Wheat Code – A story exploring sustainable agriculture and the microbial life in soil.
- The Forest of Forgotten Futures – A lyrical journey through forest connectivity and cooperation.
Each story presents a unique lens on the environmental issues explored by BiodivClim. Embedded QR codes in each comic link to the projects that inspired them, allowing readers to dive deeper into the real-world studies behind the storytelling.
The launch took place alongside a full agenda of BiodivClim activities, including project showcases, discussions on climate-biodiversity synergies, and a vibrant networking session. The Comic Art Museum was the ideal venue, where science and art met to inspire new ways of seeing, feeling, and communicating research.
This launch is part of the broader NBS Comics initiative, “NBS Comics: Nature to save the world,” originally produced by The Nature of Cities and NetworkNature+, with support from the European Commission. The project empowers artists, scientists, and nature advocates to co-create comics that are intelligent, emotional, and change-making.
