Description:

This paper discusses the pitfalls of the NbS framing and its current political traction (government, non-government and private sectors interest in NbS), and recommendations and guidelines on how to get the message behind the concept of NbS right: · Successful NbS are co-designed and implemented with local communities, to optimize the equitable delivery of multiple benefits and manage undesirable trade-offs. · NbS are not a substitute for the rapid phase out of fossil fuelsNbS can distract from the need to decarbonize energy systems, A number of high emitting industries are now proposing to use NbS to offset their greenhouse gas emissions. · There is an over-emphasis on tree planting rather than a wide range of NbS and funds are currently being channelled mainly towards tree planting, NbS involve a wide range of ecosystems on land and in the sea, not just forests; · NbS should be explicitly designed to provide measurable benefits for biodiversity. In general, few studies of NbS include explicit monitoring of biodiversity outcomes and many of the current pledges for NbS do not appear to recognize important distinctions.
