Populations of large cities are suffering from heat waves, overheated streets, floods as well as shortages and uneven distribution of water and greenery, all of which have beencontributing to a decline in the quality of life in such areas. Capital City of Prague and its officials take note of these issues and have been actively attending to them. As a result, the Prague City Council approved a “Capital City of Prague Climate Change Adaptation Strategy” vision document in 2017 with the aim to achieve an adjustment of the city and its inhabitants to the changing climate conditions through a defined framework of adaptation measures and goals, and by extension improve the quality of life in the city of Prague. In light of these efforts, Prague followed the nationwide Strategy on Adaptation to Climate Change in the Czech Republic (MoE, 2015) and consolidated a previous valuable partnership initiative with the cities of Munich and Vienna formed through the international Mayors Adapt (2015) programme. Participation in European projects such as Urban Adapt and UNaLAb also served as a valuable resource in the formulation of the Adaptation Strategy. Implementation Plan 2020 – 2024 draws on the pilot Implementation Plan 2018 – 2019 but focuses more closely on specific adaptation measures and projects which will aid in attaining the targets of the Climate Change Adaptation Strategy. Putting such projects into action allows the Capital City of Prague to monitor, based on quantifiable data, what types of adaptation measures are the most effective in their adaptational and socioeconomic impact, and aids in selecting which measures to focus on in the future.
