Nature-based solutions (NbS) are an important tool in the fight against climate change. They could provide around 30% of the cost-effective mitigation needed by 2030 to stabilize warming to below 2°C. NbS also form a powerful defense against the impacts and long-term hazards of a changing climate and have the potential to deliver significant co-benefits to nature and humanity.
NbS projects are, however, being held back from fulfilling their potential at scale by a lack of funding (public and private), which could be partly overcome by an agreement on standards and certification by an international standards body. Other concerns, such as the validity of NbS-related carbon credits, can be addressed by the sharing of best practices.
Experts from IUCN, WEF, Nestlé, Coca-Cola, and the EIB will present case studies and explain the regulatory framework necessary to boost long-term financial support for NbS during this event, organized by GLOBE European Union.
