This report, published by the IUCN Center for Mediterranean Cooperation, shows the results of an initial assessment of a number of selected projects in Mediterranean cities against the IUCN Global Standard. The projects have been chosen to uniformly represent the climatic peculiarities and idiosyncrasies of the whole Mediterranean, and to address a series of climatic risks, urban development, planning culture and systems, governance, etc. The different scales from regional to city and district level were also taken into consideration for the selection.
The analysis sought to evaluate examples of good practices - selected in different Mediterranean cities - based on the benefits of NbS and their contribution to social challenges; to identify the issues in the selected projects and explore possible directions for improvement and opportunities for strengthening the NbS interventions and the implementation process, to understand what are the lessons learned for the practical application and usability of the standard, and extract the characteristics and elements that can be shared with other practices; finally, to assess the adaptability of the Standard and how it could be revised and customized.
The target audience of the document is comprised of governments and authorities at all levels, non-governmental organizations, private companies, urban planners and professionals, the financial sector and local communities. In summary, all parties that could be involved in the creation or implementation of NbS.
