Cities are currently facing multiple environmental challenges, making the use of nature-based solutions as a highly promising approach to support urban adaptation to climate change.
As part of the LIFECOOLCITY project, the online conference "LIFE in COOL CITY. How does nature support cities in the face of climate change?" took place on 18 June 2024. During the conference a discussion was held on how to strengthen the development of blue-green infrastructure in terms of five factors that build a city's adaptive potential, i.e.: land sealing, urban heat island, the state of blue infrastructure, the state of green infrastructure, and the state of biodiversity.
During the event, Dave Barlow, Senior Policy Officer Lead - Green infrastructure & Biodiversity Environment, Planning and Infrastructure Team at Manchester City Council has given a keynote speech on nature-based solutions and challenges in the urban ecosystem.
Throughout the event, city representatives had the opportunity to learn how they can engage in consultancy activities related to the LIFECOOLCITY project and receive a free analysis of the state of the blue-green infrastructure in their city.
The conference that gathered more than 200 participants was a unique opportunity to learn how remote sensing, modern geo-information technologies and nature-based solutions can help cities adapt to climate change. In addition, it was also an occasion to exchange views and experiences about the identification of cities needs in terms of climate change adaptation, the development of a blue-green infrastructure management strategies and the monitoring of the effectiveness of its implementation.
