NetworkNature’s Knowledge gaps database has been extended!

Wait, did not you know about this resource yet? This dynamic database is your go-to resource for understanding the most pressing knowledge gaps in NbS!

What is the NbS knowledge gaps database for?

In 2021, NetworkNature compiled a comprehensive database of knowledge gaps from a wide range of scientific and grey literature, as well as institutional publications. This resource was created to serve as a valuable tool for the NbS community, guiding research and innovation while supporting the broader adoption of NbS. It provides a roadmap for future research and innovation, ensuring that NbS are effectively designed and implemented.

A fresh update of the moving research and innovation landscape

This database has recently been extended up to March 2024 to reflect the evolving landscape of NbS research and innovation. Each knowledge gap is categorised according by the type of NbS approach it pertains to - such as protection, restoration, ecosystem-based management - and by broad topics like governance and capacity-building. The updated methodology offers a more comprehensive overview of the current state of knowledge and areas requiring further data and research attention. This makes the database a dynamic tool for researchers, policymakers, and practitioners who need up-to-date insights into the most pressing gaps in NbS knowledge.

Key Insights

The updated desk study emphasizes the critical knowledge gaps that have emerged:

  • The majority of identified gaps are focused on aspects of NbS technical design, whereas gaps related to NbS capacity building are less significant.
  • Knowledge gaps are predominantly associated with ecosystem-based management approaches, particularly in the realm of ecosystem-based forest management, while ecosystem protection and restoration approaches receive comparatively less attention.
