About BioFin

Project Outline

Reinforcing the EU's position as a pioneer in financing the protection and restoration of biodiversity.

BIOFIN-EU, an EU-funded project, will create an advanced analytics dashboard driven by science and data. This dashboard will provide support for making financial decisions that promote positive impacts on nature.

The project paves the way for significant changes by promoting Nature-Based Solutions (NbS). It tackles obstacles and deficiencies in implementing the Sustainable Finance Taxonomy while offering guidance, training, and tools to support decision-making for investments in NbS.

Why Biodiversity Matters

Biodiversity is not just an environmental concern. It is a fundamental pillar of human survival and well-being. Healthy ecosystems provide essential services, often called “ecosystem services,” that underpin economies, agriculture, and public health. Some key benefits include:

Objectives

Create and test solutions to quickly and effectively gather and share valuable biodiversity and Ecosystem Services data.

Understand preferences and regulations of capital owners, financial institutions, and NbS-providers to integrate governance aspects into business models, financial instruments, and associated technologies.

Develop trustworthy, accurate, and fair data sharing of biodiversity and Ecosystem Services outcomes to reduce transaction costs and other barriers to nature finance.

Design and test new business models and biodiversity-linked investments that maintain protections for NbS-providers and their communities while securing long-horizon benefits for NbS-promoters.

Integrate relevant processes, systems and reporting and disclosure requirements and support organisations in directing financial flows towards biodiversity protection and restoration.

Build knowledge and skills among current and future finance professionals and decision-makers and build a community to advance the implementation of the regulations to co-develop solutions and accelerate the financial flow of funds towards biodiversity-linked activity.

Examine i) opportunities arising from specifically, nature positive investment by analysis preferences among shareholders, bond investors, consumers and retirees; ii) transition costs associated with the re-allocation of finance from destructive economic activity; iii) financial models associated with corporate performance as well as fund management performance.

Expected Results

BIOFIN-EU Data Analytics & Underwriting Engine

to allow discovery, purchase, use and contribution of ES/NbS raw data and provide various analytics services.

BIOFIN-EU Database

to bring together high-quality biodiversity and Ecosystem Services data from various NbS sources.

Policy Recommendations

to develop accounting standards, financial services regulation and related policy guidance.

BIOFIN-EU Nature Positive Business Model Builder

to support the decision-making towards NbS lending/investments.

Skills and Knowledge Accelerators

to transfer new knowledge through training, business simulation, case studies and mentoring courses of the BIOFIN-EU activities.
