NetworkNature is going to COP 17 in Yerevan, Armenia, Oct. 19-30 in partnership with CO-OP4CBD! Local and subnational government leaders from around the world, together with their key stakeholders, are invited to participate in targeted and high-level dialogues on implementation progress and the important issue of leveraging financing for, and investment in, biodiversity and nature at the local and territorial scale.
More information about NetworkNature's collaboration at COP 17 with CO-OP4CBD can be found here.
COP CBD at a glance:
The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is an international treaty made up of 196 parties that serves to conserve biodiversity, promote sustainable use, and ensure fair access to resources and the equitable distribution of benefits. A party is typically a sovereign nation or a regional economic integration organization (an organisation composed of multiple foreign states). Biodiversity focused Conferences of the Parties (COPs) are organised every two years, and were born out of the Earth Summit, which took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1992.
COP CBDs address the following issues:
- Measures and incentives for the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity;
- regulated access to genetic resources;
- access to and transfer of technology, including biotechnology;
- technical and scientific cooperation;
- impact assessment;
- education and public awareness;
- provision of financial resources;
- and national reporting on efforts to implement treaty commitments.
This year represents the 17th meeting of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17) with the theme of Taking Action for Nature. The gathering will focus on progress towards biodiversity goals, nature finance, and accountability mechanisms. To this end, it will undertake the first global review of collective progress in implementing the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF). Outcomes are expected to provide critical guidance for accelerated implementation and strengthened ambition worldwide towards the agreed upon targets and goals, set for 2030 and 2050 respectively.
