European Natura 2000 Award opens new category for urban nature projects

The European Commission has launched the 8th edition of the European Natura 2000 Award, recognising the initiatives protecting and restoring nature in the the world’s largest coordinated network of protected areas.

New for 2026 is the Towns & cities category, focusing on conservation achievements in urban or peri-urban areas that are linked to Natura 2000 sites. Eligible activities include protecting species and habitats, strengthening ecological connectivity, improving ecosystem services that support climate resilience, or engaging urban communities with nature. Applications demonstrating links to urban sustainability and citizen involvement are particularly encouraged.

The Award is open to public authorities, NGOs, businesses, landowners, educational institutions and individuals involved in Natura 2000. Application are open across five categories, and all finalists will be eligible for the public vote for the European Citizen's Award.

  • Register here for the Award Secretariat's online applicants’ workshop on 17 June 2026 from 10.30-12.30 (CET). This is an opportunity to learn more about the process, receive practical advice for preparing a strong application and hear insights from previous finalists.
