The LIFE COOLCITY project delivers solutions that support cities in effective adaptation to climate change through the development, implementation, and dissemination of innovative tools for managing blue-green infrastructure. The project addresses the growing climate challenges faced by modern cities, such as overheating of urban spaces, biodiversity loss, water retention issues, and excessive surface sealing. Our project places strong emphasis on knowledge exchange between cities, promoting best practices and peer learning. Participating cities can test tools, co-create solutions, and share their experiences with other municipalities across Europe.
Through the Open Call: Join the CoolCities Team, we invite cities interested in strengthening climate resilience to join the COOLCITY network. Participation includes climate benchmarking, free access to analytical tools, and regular online meetings for experience sharing and continuous improvement of the COOLCITY environment.

We invite you to join COOLCITY, a collaborative team focused on exchanging knowledge and testing solutions that respond to real urban challenges of cities across Europe. Members actively contribute to improving the COOLCITY LIFE project. Participation involves 1–2 online meetings per quarter.

COOLCITY provides decision-makers and planners an objective, and comparable data on the state of the urban environment. By combining satellite and aerial data with the expertise of an interdisciplinary team, the project visualizes environmental challenges and identifies effective urban planning solutions, such as Nature-based Solutions (NBS), tailored to local conditions.
From Global Knowledge to Local Action
COOLCITY is built on the idea of “Global insight – local action.” The project enables cities to move through the entire adaptation process, from inventorying environmental assets, through their assessment and action planning, to implementation, management, and long-term monitoring of outcomes.
Key adaptation challenges analyzed in the project include:
- Land permeability – analysis of the share and distribution of impermeable surfaces
- Green infrastructure condition – identification of low and high vegetation, tree health, and changes over time
- Biodiversity – assessment of biological diversity and the continuity of the city’s ecological system
- Water conditions – analysis of retention potential and the presence of water bodies and wetlands
- Thermal conditions – identification of urban heat islands and cooling areas
Based on these analyses, integrated spatial indicators have been developed, including the COOLCITY Index, which enables city comparisons and supports planning and decision-making.
COOLCITY Products and Tools
As part of the project, an ecosystem of complementary tools is being developed:
- COOLCITY Ranking – a free ranking of more than 11,000 EU cities
- COOLCITY View – a planning tool for monitoring and planning actions to increase urban resilience, by joining the COOLCITY Team, participants will receive this product free of charge.
- COOLCITY Design – a planning tool with a Decision Support System for Nature-based Solutions (NBS
Team and Partnership
The project is implemented by an interdisciplinary team of experts from MGGP Aero, in cooperation with the University of Warsaw, the University of Łódź, international technology partners, and pilot cities such as Wrocław. As a result, LIFE COOLCITY combines scientific expertise, innovative technologies, and the practical needs of local governments.
